Activity 8.5

INSTALLED CAPACITY OF WIND POWER PLANTS

Aim:

When you have completed this activity, you will have developed an understanding of the reasons for the sites and sizes of wind farms in Australia.

You will need:

  • The list of wind power plant locations from the Fact Sheet
  • An atlas

Procedure:

  • Examine the list from the Fact Sheet. Find the locations of these power plants on a map of Australia. What is the relationship between the amount of installed capacity and the location of the wind power plants?
  • Australia is starting to build more wind farms. In other countries, wind farms contain many wind turbines connected to produce power for the grid. Instead of having many wind turbines, why not have just one very big wind turbine?
  • Compare the installed capacity of all the wind power plants in Queensland with the installed capacity of the two large power stations near Brisbane, Tarong and Wivenhoe. What does this tell you about the likely future of wind-generated electric power in Queensland?
