Activity 9.3

THINKING ABOUT LARGE HYDRO SYSTEMS

Aim:

When you have completed this activity you will have formed opinions on the value of large scale hydro systems.

You will need:

  • Topographic map of Australia

Procedure:

  • Use the map of Australia to locate the position of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme, the Tasmanian Hydroelectric Scheme and the hydroelectric power plants in Queensland which are listed in the Fact Sheet. Do you think there will be any more large hydroelectric schemes developed in Australia? Where could they be situated? Why do you think some people are opposed to any more large dams for hydroelectric schemes?
  • Note the location of the Wivenhoe Dam where there is a pumped storage hydroelectric unit. Do you think there will be any more pumped storage hydroelectric units in Australia? Where could they be situated?
