Introductory lesson 1 – Level 3

Task

Students identify and describe forms of energy, the source and the uses.

Outcomes:

Science:

  • E.C. 3.3 Students identify different ways of obtaining energy.
  • E.B. 3.3 Students collect information which describes ways in which living things use the Earth and the sun as resources.

Introductory Activities

Students:

  • make a list of activities they engage in that use energy;

  • consider going on holidays to a destination without electricity (a tropical island). Predict what daily activities may change and what effects this may cause;

  • suggest possible alternatives to provide for your needs at the holiday destination.

The engaging activity can take as little as 10 minutes or continue for up to 30 minutes depending on the interest and participation of the students.

Developmental Activities

Students:

  • view the video and make notes of any forms of energy mentioned;

  • pair/share ideas and improve the lists;

  • share ideas with the class then collate under broader headings to identify the source of the energy e.g. coal, oil gas, wind etc;

  • make a list of terms;

  • discuss student's knowledge of the terms;

  • use dictionaries or reference books to define the terms. Compare to prior understandings of the terms;

  • discuss in small groups what further information the learners would like to gather about the topic.

Culminating Activities

Students:

  • discuss global warming and the relationships to energy (use information from the video);

  • evaluate knowledge of different sources using Activity 3.1 worksheets.

Activity sheets can be used as examples of students understanding for assessment.

Extension Activity: Use energy domino cards to consolidate knowledge of terms from the lesson.
