Developmental lesson 2 – Level 4

Task

Students research and present an alternative source of energy as a PowerPoint display and use the information as a basis for further discussion (lesson 6).

Outcomes:

Science:

  • E.C. 4.3 Students present alternative ways of obtaining and using energy (including energy from the sun and fossil fuels) for particular purposes.
  • E.B. 4.3 Students summarize information to compare ways in which different communities use resources from the Earth and beyond.

SOSE:

  • P.S. 4.1 Students make justifiable links between ecological and economic factors and the production and consumption of a familiar resource.

Introductory Activities

Students:

  • form work groups (2–3 students) and choose one energy source to research;

  • preview and discuss the criteria sheet for the report and assessment standards for producing the report as a PowerPoint or web page presentation.

Developmental Activities

Students:

  • brainstorm possible sources for gathering information – suggested web sites are provided (see resource list below);

  • prepare headings related to criteria sheet;

  • define the source and related forms of energy, how it works, where it is used;

  • complete a map showing locations where this energy supply is in use;

  • explain any ecological factors related to this energy source i.e. conservation issues, greenhouse effects;

  • include any economic factors which relate to the usage of this source of energy;

  • present information on PowerPoint display or web page.

Culminating Activities

Students:

  • use information from reports to generate a comparative discussion or debate over the most effective energy sources;

  • predict future implications of energy consumption and the ecological impact.

Assessment includes written and visual presentation of report and spoken activities.

Extension activities could include persuasive speaking activities to promote one particular energy source to be adopted as a preferred futures option.
