Developmental lesson 4 – Level 3

Task

Students investigate occupations related to the production of energy sources.

Outcomes:

Science:

  • 3.3 Students identify different ways of obtaining energy.

SOSE:

  • S.R.P. 3.2 Students create a representation of occupational specialisation and interdependence in an industry from past, present or future.

Introductory Activities

Students:

  • invite a representative from an energy industry to talk about their work;

  • brainstorm different occupations related to the transformations from energy sources into power;

  • watch the video to identify the history of the industry and related occupations.

Developmental Activities

Students:

  • use the information from brainstorming to produce a concept map showing the occupations involved in obtaining and using energy;

  • prepare separate concept maps for different energy sources and compare the occupations;

  • compare occupations related to energy production ranging from the past to the present. Predict future occupations;

  • make links to show the interdependence between occupations on the concept maps;

  • discuss what work is involved in some of these occupations;

  • discuss what training or education is needed to work in these occupations.

Culminating Activities

Students:

  • produce a large flow chart for a wall display depicting the various occupations (past, present and future) as drawings by the students with a caption to inform the viewer of the work each person does.
