Science: Lesson 1 – Introductory sequence
What do you know about energy? (Teachers)

Key ideas:

  • Energy comes in many forms.
  • There are many sources of energy but most depend on the radiation from the sun or the heat from nuclear reactions inside the earth.

Introductory activity elicits forms of energy

Energy, which exists in various forms, is the capacity for doing work - potential and kinetic energy, heat, light, sound, chemical, nuclear, electrical, solar.

Issues to highlight in developmental activities

  • The characters in the video present the views as supporters of the environmental movement;

  • The video presents the view that alternative sources of energy are preferable for a sustainable future;

  • Did the students during activity 1 present forms that the video did not?

Extension
Students' mind maps completed individually indicate the understanding of the concepts. (This may be an assessment task.)

Culminating activities to reflect and evaluate

Students need to consider:

  • earlier residents used sources and forms of energy that were readily available and low technology solutions;

  • voices of scientists, users of energy, providers of energy, workers in the industry, engineers of energy technologies;

  • all energy converters need minerals, have associated financial and environmental impacts.

Extension
Glossary: alternative energy, energy, forms of energy, impacts, kinetic energy, potential energy, sources of energy, sustainable future.
